AuPS HDR/ECR Virtual Webinar

Advancing Equity and Diversity in Physiology Research

Webinar description:

Physiology research has historically, and continues to be biased, often not considering sex and gender diversity. Therapeutic and behavioural interventions derived from results in these studies are then generalised to the overall population without thought to the myriad physiological and implementation differences. Therefore, the presenters for the first instalment of our webinar series this year include, Prof. Severine Lamon, an expert in sex differences in exercise physiology and Dr. Sav Zwinkl, an expert in trans health across a broad range of topics (see more detailed information on each speaker below). This promises to be an engaging discussion about the necessity of making physiology research more equitable and diverse and the abundant benefits for everyone in our communities for doing so.

Presenter bios:

Professor Severine Lamon is an ARC Future Fellow conducting research within Deakin University’s School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences and Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition. Severine is a molecular biologist by training, and her research program focuses on the sex differences in skeletal muscle adaptation to health and disease, with a focus on the role of sex hormones in muscle adaptation to ageing. Severine is also the Victorian co-director of the Centre for Sex & Gender Equity in Health and Medicine, and the National Secretary of the Australian Physiological Society.

Dr Sav Zwinkl (they/them) is a Research Fellow with the Trans Health Research Group, based in the Department of Medicine at The University of Melbourne. They are the lead researcher of TRANSform, Australia's largest longitudinal trans adult health study. Sav's research interests cover a broader range of trans health topics, including mental health and wellbeing, impacts of gender-affirming hormone therapy, and health service delivery. As a trans non-binary person, Sav is passionate about the inclusion of trans people in research and is the lead author of Including Trans People in Research: A Practical Guide to Collecting Data on Gender and Sex
